On The Move-Transfers! Søster Severson's Adventures in Sønderborg Denmark, April 26, 2021 Week 53
The week! I am going to try and remember everything that happened this week but it has been a little bit crazy so I am not going to be able to do it justice.
Tuesday: normal work day, met with people, worked on Instagram classic, drove to Horsens for splits with Sister Skousen and Sister Hafen
Wednesday: 20th birthday!! Got to spend the day with the sisters, it was really fun! Drove back to Sønderborg and had a correlation meeting that was also a little surprise party from our Elders Quorum and Relief >Society presidents. They made me a gf cake that gave me classic Danish chocolate milk. Literally love them! Meeting was good and Sister English and I were hyped, we had a bunch of referrals and were excited to get grinding reaching out to them.
Thursday: District council, and a mission wide banke på session where we all went out and knocked on doors at the same time in our respective areas. The adrenaline was a little bit high and made for some strange conversations but it was fun! Then we were asked to teach institute on Numbers chapters 1-12 (arguably one of the most boring books in the bible) but somehow it actually turned into a really fun lesson! Adrian, Amanda and Asgeir our branches three recent converts were all there and we told them about patriarchal blessings and I think they really enjoyed it! Very strange combination of English and Danish though with two Danes, two Americans, an Icelander and Romanian, but we managed. Then we received the most ominous text from our mission president that he would be calling about transfers right away (instead of Saturday morning).
Sooo Sønderborg is closing :((( and Sister English is heading to Odense (pronounced like o-lense-aa) with Sister Stokes and I am now up in Horsens (no, not horses but HorseNs) with Sister Skousen!!!
The rest of Saturday and Sunday were spent being sad and packing, we are both super grateful for the time that we had in Sønderborg, it was both of our "baby areas" in Denmark. We will miss our branch and the sønderjysk (wack Danish they speak down there). But transfers are always fun! Super excited to see what these next six weeks hold!
A little spiritual thought that doubles as a fun Danish insight: In Danish the word to become "at blive" also means to stay. f.eks. "Jeg skal ikke blive i Sønderborg." and "Jeg vil gerne blive en mor" (´I shall not stay in Sønderborg` and `I would like to become a mother´ respectively.) It can get a little confusing with phrases like "jeg vil blive en missionær" I would like to become a missionary/ I will stay a missionary (obviously this is where context is important ;)
But it has gotten me to think about how much staying really has to do with becoming. On my mission I have learned how much of becoming has to do with small habits, consistency, continuing and enduring especially when one does not want to. That is how we become. and the state of remaining is also in a way the state of constantly becoming. When we seek to become better at anything we should always think what habits or characteristics will make me "X"? When I think about Jesus Christ and becoming like Him, I often feel overwhelmed. But it helps to think all I have to do is do what he did, and break it down into small habits that I can accomplish so that I can become more like him everyday. What are habits or patterns you are working on? Who are you trying to become? Shoot me an email I would love to hear about it!!
Love you all and hope you all have a fantastisk uge!
Kærlig Hilsen
Søster Severson
